Travel Tips

Updated: Oct 19, 2025

People tend to associate great experiences and activities with a high price. The more you have to pay, the better the experience. However, throughout my journey of exploring Perth, I discovered that you don't need large pockets to enjoy and have fun. It's about setting your budget, finding ways to reduce costs, and engaging in activities that are both affordable and enjoyable. Here are some of my favourite tips to consider when exploring Perth.

Transport

Cars tend to add additional costs to our budget, such as petrol and parking tickets. Using public transport is a great way to reduce spending. As students, you can utilise free transit zones for buses for free transport or use the smart riders, which provide 10% discounts on tickets along with free rides on the first Sunday of every month.

Free Attractions

There are multiple free-to-visit locations around Perth. These include beach visits, long walks near Swan River, hiking spots, visiting markets and picnic dates at Kings Park. These are great when you are looking for chill activities during your low cash moments.

Prepare your meals

Some attraction spots offer great prices for their entry fees. On your adventure, you might get hungry and decide to grab a meal from a nearby cafe or food truck, only to realise the prices are INSANE! This is a common issue that many people face. Packing a few light lunches will reduce the overall cost and allow you to stay full during your adventure. Please ensure that the location you are visiting allows personal food before visiting, as some venues do not permit outside food.

Check travel websites

Perth has a lot of events that occur throughout the year, ranging from free tours, arts and theatre, museums, and nightlife activities. Some of my favourite websites to find new places and events to join include TripAdvisor and Visit Perth, which allow you to tailor the experience you want while sharing the budget amount it requires.
